Serve to lead

A common misconception about leaders and managers is that they have established authority because they are good at bossing people around.

But just as making money requires you to serve, so does building authority. The most respected and most authoritative leaders have built their respect and authority through serving others. Authority is just another currency, in lieu of money.

If they were to boss around in a destructive fashion, they would spend their authority currency - people would begin to view their leader in a less favourable light. But if they lead in a synergistic and mutually beneficial fashion, then they only gain more authority.

If you haven't served, you cannot lead.
